Cherry Pit II
"Get Bit"
The Boat
The Cherry Pit is a 28
foot (loa) Blackman Fishmachine with a covered cabin, tinted windows
and fly bridge. The shiny red hull lets her stand out among the fleet.
Powered by a 130hp diesel engine makes her very efficient.
"Guaranteed no diesel fumes."
Jim Cherry (my dad) had the Cherry Pit custom built by Don Blackman.
Don
Blackman was known for making heavy duty sea worthy sportfishers.
Fortunately the waters of Kona are typically calm, so we rarely have to
put her to the test.
Raising Fish
Raising
fish is the boats ability to attract fish to itself. Some boats have
it, others don't. The Cherry Pit II definitely has it. The gentle
vibrations generated by the diesel engine make the perfect harmonics.
If you were to ask people about it they would say the same thing.
"The Cherry Pit definitely raises fish."
Fishing
We
use two techniques to catch big game fish: Live Baiting and Trolling
Lures. Live Baiting involves finding and catching the bait fish
(2-10lb skipjack or yellowfin tuna), which can be just as fun as
catching the big ones. Once we catch our bait I'll rig them up and
slow troll at 2 knots. This can be vary effective when there's a lot
of fish in the area. Sometimes drawing multiple strikes. Expect to
catch small to big marlin, big yellowfin tuna and big mahimahi.
Trolling
Lures is another effective way to catch fish. As all charter boats do,
I run five trolling rods with a variety of sized lures which will
produce bites from 5lb fish to 1000lb fish (no joke 1000lb) and every
other size in between. While trolling at 8 knots we cover a lot more
territory than live baiting. I think it's much more exciting getting a
lure bite than a live bait bite. Expect to catch all the big game fish
including all sizes of marlin, tuna, mahi mahi, spearfish, and ono.
